Parameter interpretation of the Menzerath law: evidence from Serbian

چکیده

The law-like relation between word and syllable length as part of the Menzerath law has been corrobated empirically in many different languages. As to South Slavic languages, we have the studies by Gajić (1950) and Grzybek (1999) on Croatian, and by Grzybek (2000) on Slovene. The aim of the present paper is first of all to provide empirical evidence of the Menzerath law for another South Slavic language, namely Serbian, distinguishing different text sorts in our analysis. Second, a linguistic interpretation of the usually iteratively derived parameters of the Menzerath law is offered. Furthermore it will be shown that some parameters of the Menzerath law can be replaced by empirically obtainable quantitative features.

Optimization of parameters in the Menzerath–Altmann law*

Four formulas of the Menzerath–Altmann law are tested from the point of view of their applicability and suitability. The accuracy of related approximations of measured data is examined by the least square method at first. Then the accuracy of calculated parameters in the formulas under consideration is compared statistically. The influence of neglecting parameter c is investigated as well. Fina...

Systematic Interrelations Between Grapheme Frequencies and Word Length: Empirical Evidence from Slovene

This paper focuses on the question whether grapheme frequencies are in a direct relationship to word length. In other words, a possible interrelation between the frequency of graphemes and the length of linguistic units is discussed. Based on different Slovene text types it is shown that the Altmann-Menzerath law is an adequate theoretical explanation for the supposed interrelation between grap...

Menzerath-Altmann law in mammalian exons reflects the dynamics of gene structure evolution

Genomic sequences exhibit self-organization properties at various hierarchical levels. One such is the gene structure of higher eukaryotes with its complex exon/intron arrangement. Exon sizes and exon numbers in genes have been shown to conform to a law derived from statistical linguistics and formulated by Menzerath and Altmann, according to which the mean size of the constituents of an entity...

Random models of Menzerath-Altmann law in genomes

Recently, a random breakage model has been proposed to explain the negative correlation between mean chromosome length and chromosome number that is found in many groups of species and is consistent with Menzerath-Altmann law, a statistical law that defines the dependency between the mean size of the whole and the number of parts in quantitative linguistics. Here, the central assumption of the ...

Menzerath–altmann Law

In the paper, the definition of clause suitable for an automated processing of a Ukrainian text is proposed. The Menzerath–Altmann law is verified on the sentence level and the parameters for the dependences of the clause length counted in words and syllables on the sentence length counted in clauses are calculated for Perekhresni Stežky (The Cross-Paths), a novel by Ivan Franko.
